Colourful, abstract brushstrokes

A FABLED GESTURE

GREGORY HODGE

Exhibition Dates: 29 May - 4 July 2015

Gregory Hodge’s practice engages with a process-based approach to painting combining abstraction with illusionistic and perceptual painting techniques.

Informed by the Baroque sensibility found in Rome’s decorative spaces, Hodge has developed new processes in recent work; constructing large layered compositions from collaged abstract motifs on paper.

Unbound by the confines of a frame these cut-out silhouetted works have sense of airiness as space opens up between one gesture and the next. By manipulating paints' ability to allude to dimensional form, the shapes appear to float as if protruding off the wall. Flat gestural marks pop from the surface, folding and unfolding within the picture space.
