INNERSPACE

CHRISTOPHER BENNIE, JACQUELINE BRADLEY, HAM DARROCH, SHELLAINE GODBOLD, ELLIS HUTCH, CLAIRE PENDRIGH-ELLIOTT, RUSTY PETERS, JED WOLKI

CURATED BY DAVID BROKER

Exhibition Dates: 10 July - 15 August 2015

For hundreds (if not thousands) of years artists have looked to the heavens with a sense of awe and wonder but for Christopher Bennie, Jacqueline Bradley, Ham Darroch, Shellaine Godbold, Ellis Hutch, Claire Pendrigh-Elliott, Rusty Peters and Jed Wolki the cosmos is simply at home.

Innerspace presents the idea of deep space as a personal, domestic matter. Whether employing cosmic clichés, scientific research, observation or stories, for these artists the universe can be found in the kitchen, nursery, the studio or the backyard. Materials are modest, with, cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, chocolate wrappers, postcards, wool, old newspapers, trash and breakfast cereal serving astrophysical concepts minus the mystery.

Curator and Director of Canberra Contemporary Art Space, David Broker, said, “Innerspace is an exhibition that sees big cosmic ideas grounded by the gravitational pull of mundane imagination. It may not blow your mind but it will provide a completely different and highly amusing perspective on everything you thought you knew about outer space.”
