CCAS MEMBERS’ SHOWCASE
Exhibition Opening: 6pm Friday 27 October
OPEN FOR ONE DAY ONLY: Saturday 28 October, CCAS Lakeside
Thank you to everyone that came to our annual Members’ Showcase! A big thank you to the 25 members who rose to challenge and responded to this year’s theme For the Record. Drawing inspiration from the humble LP, they have sought to repurpose, reimagine, and reinterpret the record.
The big winner of the night was Saskia Haalebos, with everything unsaid, who picked up a tidy cash prize of $500 kindly sponsored by Canberra City Framing! Highly Commended was awarded to Dan Maginnity for their sculpture For the Record and our lucky raffle prize winners were Ray (who won a $50 voucher to Abel’s Kopi Tiam restaurant), Neil (who won an Eckersleys surprise goodie bag valued at $150) and Pheobe (who won a $300 voucher to the Jetty).
Thank you to our wonderful judge Waratah Lahy, who picked our winners and also had a special mention for exhibiting artists Nicci Haynes, Jane Barney, Bridget Baskerville and Ashe! Of the winning works, Waratah says:
The work I selected for the Highly Commended prize is Byrd’s For the Record. I responded immediately to this work, and admire the juxtaposition of casual formality, overt and covert messaging. I like the combination of concrete, timber, metal, and paint, and I enjoy the presence and physicality of the work. Congratulations to the artist.
The winning work of the 2023 CCAS Member’s Show … immediately struck me with its eloquence: a moving and quietly beautiful combination of text and what I think might be a deconstructed record sleeve. The words ‘the dust crackles at the end’ conjures an immediate sense of sound from the humble materials and speaks to the multi-sensory experience of listening to a record, while also alluding to the bigger picture: life itself and to so many incredible beginning and endings. Congratulations Saskia Haalebos – for your work everything unsaid.
A big thank you also to our DJ for the night, Sam Tingey and our generous sponsors: Mick at Canberra City Framing, Rena and team at the Jetty Canberra, Mary at Eckersleys Braddon and Abell’s Kopi Tiam restaurant!
