Abstract painting in orange, purple, green and white

THROUGH FABRIC

JAMES LIEUTENANT

19 - 29 May 2022 @ CCAS MANUKA

James Lieutenant's artworks often focus on gritty and abject textures, linking this to trauma in his own personal history and that happening on a global scale around him. James aims to visualise seemingly opposing feelings of trauma, vulnerability and beauty simultaneously.

This body of work is a slight departure from James' usual art making, the works are less focused on textures and agitation. Made through slow layering of colour over an extended period of time, the viewer can see through the surface of the paintings. The fragmented process captured in the layers allows an understanding of how the objects were made, while still experiencing painterly illusions. With an aim towards a pure minimal colour type of abstraction, in these paintings James balances fluidity and vulnerability within the surfaces.

James Lieutenant is represented by Jennings Kerr.
