Peter Vandermark is a Canberra-based artist whose work explores the relationship between function and form. He is interested in how life and art blend at both domestic and public levels, drawing inspiration from architecture, furnishings, models, maquettes, and design. His pieces are carefully crafted from repurposed found objects, creating elegant abstract forms. Items like old chairs, wooden toys, signage, and ducting are broken down, reassembled, painted, and transformed.
Vandermark describes his practice as an exploration of how the designed environment affects human spatial ecology, focusing on the scale, dimensions, and textures of inhabitation. He views sculpture as a study in human proxemics, the use of space in human interactions.
Vandermark’s works are held in several major collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, ACT Legislative Assembly, Australian National University, and the Canberra Museum and Gallery.
Peter Vandermark is represented by Olsen Gallery, Sydney, and Beaver Galleries, Canberra.
