Fable ... Once Upon a Time

16 - 25 August 2024, CCAS Manuka

Exhibition Opening 6pm Thursday 15 August 2024

Creating art as a queer artist is a captivating and transformative journey that weaves
together objects and figures in a mythological space.  Through this unique blend I explore the profound depths of identity and self-expression within the LGBTQIA+ community.  This serves as both a creative outlet and a means to connect with my audience and my
community on a profound level.

In my compositions, objects and figures coexist alongside symbols and narratives. These symbols, steeped in historical meaning, bring ancient allegories into the contemporary queer narrative, through the filters of gender fulidity and drag ball culture. This visual language speaks to the interplay of queer identity, inviting viewers to embark on their own journey.

Light and shadow, fundamental to my work, mirror the dualities of queer existence.
Illuminating both self-discovery, acceptance, and celebration of our identities, as well as shrouding the hidden aspects of our lives.  Within my works, figures become modern-day mythological beings, embodying archetypes and themes.  The fairy tale glass slipper, becomes Gainsborough’s boy blue shoe, evolving into Balenciaga. This allows for the integration of past into the present, reinforcing the idea that our queer experiences are part of an
enduring and universal narrative.

Through the incorporation of symbolism, the works aim to challenge societal norms, spark conversations, and foster a sense of connection within the LGBTQIA+ community.
Through these narratives, we can celebrate our uniqueness, inspire dialogue, and contribute to a world where every identity is cherished as a vital part of our shared story.
