HARIJS PIEKALNS
Recent Work 2021 - 2023
10 - 19 November 2023, CCAS Manuka
This new body of work by Harijs Piekalns interrogates varied approaches to the wave symbol, which holds significance for various cultures as a representation of water, and also carries meaning from his pre-Christian Latvian heritage as a symbol of maternal earth. Piekalns' artistic approach centers on materiality, with every painting component personally prepared by the artist using Gesso Sottile grounds (made by combining slaked Plaster of Paris with rabbit skin glue), and earth pigments sourced from various locations in Australia.
